Events

Porto is well known for its two biggest festivals, the Sao Joao festivities and the Queima das Fitas. These two events are very popular in Portugal, and you should definitely take part in these events at least once in your lifetime.

 

 

Festivals

·        Sao Joao festivities

Info: 23 June is the day of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Porto. In the evening everybody gathers in downtown and hit each other with plastic hammers and leeks. There are also fires lit on the streets that are jumped over. At midnight there’s a big fireworks show next to the river.

·        Queima das Fitas

Info: Before the beginning of the study period preceding the school year’s last exams, academia tries to have as much fun as possible. During every night of the week a series of concerts takes place on the Queimódromo, next to the city’s park.

When: annually, the second week in May

 

·        Noites Ritual Rock

Info: This festival, which takes place each year in Porto’s Crystal Palace Gardens, features many local bands as well as other bands from across Portugal. All the biggest local bands have played here at one time and many have made their names here.
